The annual Veterans Day and “Voices from the Stone” program will be held at the Veterans Monument Plaza on the Union County Courthouse lawn on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
Ten years ago, the Veterans Monument and Plaza was dedicated to all Union County veterans and the first “Voices from the Stone” was heard. The honorees on this 10th year will be the first casualties of the Vietnam War from Union County – Calvin Newell, Ronald Hamilton and Charles Bowersmith.
The goal of the Veterans Remembrance Committee, which oversees the plaza, is to make sure all Union County veterans are honored in the county website database and kiosk that is located behind the monument and by having a brick in the plaza with their name inscribed.
The plaza belongs to every veteran in the county and honors those, past and present, who have served, whether during conflict or peace on home soil or overseas.
New pavers will be dedicated into the plaza at this Veterans Day program. A veteran may purchase their own paver, or they can be purchased as a gift. Any family, friend or an organization can add a paver and they can be located close to a comrade’s paver.
Pavers may be purchased at the Union County Foundation, www.unioncountyfoundation.org, or at 126 N. Main St. The purchase deadline for this year’s dedication is Friday, Oct. 13. those interested in helping with the general care of the plaza can do so by making personal or business tax deductible contribution to the Veterans Remembrance Fund, c/o Union County Foundation.
There are currently 2,081 Veteran pavers purchased and installed in the plaza floor, and 4,279 published veteran records on the website, which may be accessed at www.ucvetmemorial.org or at the kiosk at the plaza.
All veterans are encouraged to publish their information with a picture on the county website. For more information, those interested may contact Marie Bouic at (740) 666-2333 or bouic1@gmail.com.
