North Union Superintendent Rich Baird announced Monday night that he had just received word from the Ohio Board of Education that the district had received an Ohio Momentum Award.
Seventy other schools also received the honor. This award recognizes schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year.
Schools must earn straight A’s on all Value-Added measures on the state report card. The school or district must have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20 percent in achievement and students with disabilities. This is the fourth year of the Department of Education in giving the Momentum Award
North Union Elementary Principal Darlene Allison also announced that North Union Elementary had won the Ohio High Progress Award, which is based on the 2017-2018 Ohio Report Card. NUE is one of 67 elementary schools in Ohio that received the award. This is the fifth you of the Department of Education to acknowledge the award.
In the spirit of announcing awards, Rita Parker was the December #NUPride Community Award winner. She was nominated because of her continued support of the school district in education, music and athletics and her dedication of supporting community events. She is a member of the Richwood Area Business Association and various other entities that make the Richwood community a better place to live.
Baird presented board president Dennis Hall with a resolution, honoring his 15 years of service on the school board. He was presented with a plaque and Baird read a resolution honoring him as the board of education president. Hall’s retirement was effective after the board meeting. Hall nominated board member Brian Davis to serve as President Pro Tem for the 2019 Organizational Meeting on Monday, Jan. 7. The board will meet at 6 p.m. for the organizational meeting, with the regular meeting to follow.
In other business, the board:
–Heard Baird announce honors for students in sports, robotics and FFA.
-Approved a list of volunteers, certified and non-certified substitute personnel as needed for the 2018-2019 school year.
-Approved Mike Render as high school JV cheer coach for the fall at 1/2 contract.
-Gave approval for the high school robotics club for an overnight stay at Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia, from Jan. 24-27 for a competition.
-Approved participation and partial funding for a school resource officer with the Union County Sheriff’s Department for the 2018-2019 school year at a cost of $25,000.
The board went into executive session to discuss the possible appointment of a replacement of a school board member to fill the vacant seat of Dennis Hall.
