Dear Editor,
With the admitted inflation rate of 8.26% and in reality certainly much higher, prices doubling for groceries and gas, and the country likely headed into a recession, Union County will add to the financial crunch by increasing property taxes. No one owns a home anymore; we rent from the government. I know people in the county who pay $700 or more per month in property taxes. If they aren’t paid, you stand the chance of losing your home.
It’s an inherently inequitable system. Does someone paying $700 per month receive better services than someone paying $200 – or nothing? If most of that tax money goes to the schools, why do senior citizens, who haven’t had children in the system for years, still pay? Do multi-million dollar school buildings produce a better education? I attended Plain City schools back in the day when the buildings were modest. I don’t think educational results have improved since then.
Although I’d love to see property taxes abolished, I realize that’s not likely to happen. A few common sense regulations would make the system more fair. Cap the amount per homeowner at something like $300 per month. After paying property taxes for around 25 years, no further payments are collected. Schools, and whoever else relies on these funds, need to live within a budget – scrimping and cutting costs like the rest of us are required to do.
